“Meeting People Online Just Became More Fun”
My Role: Research, UX/UI Design
Design Tools: Figma, Adobe XD
Project Duration: 3 Months
Overview
Yours Truly is a dating app focused on single men and women aged 25 and older. This app was inspired by friends and family that struggled within the dating app world. The objective of this research was to identify ways to improve user engagement and match quality in a dating app by leveraging user interests and preferences and creating helpful methods to communicate. My goal was to create a more personalized experience that aligns with users' values and relationship goals, ultimately leading to more meaningful connections.
The Problem
With the increasing number of dating apps on the market, users often face difficulties finding matches that genuinely align with their interests and values. Many apps rely on superficial criteria such as profile photos or basic demographics, which may not fully capture the nuances of user compatibility. This research aimed to explore methods for enhancing user matching by incorporating deeper insights into user preferences and behaviors.
Therefore, the Problem statement is:
Given the increasing saturation of dating apps, users frequently encounter challenges in finding meaningful matches because of the focus on superficial attributes such as profile photos and basic demographics. This research seeks to tackle this problem by investigating ways to incorporate deeper insights into user preferences and developing features that address ongoing issues. The objective is to refine user matching and elevate the overall quality of connections on dating platforms.
Research
User Surveys and Interviews
Competitive Analysis
Analyzed features and algorithms of leading dating apps such as Tinder, Bumble, BLK, Match.com, to identify best practices and gaps in current matching technologies.
Behavioral Analysis
Studied participants using a new feature designed to capture users' detailed interests and values. Monitored engagement metrics and user feedback to evaluate the feature's impact on match quality and satisfaction.
Data Analysis
Employed statistical analysis to interpret survey and behavioral data, identifying key factors that contribute to user satisfaction and effective matches.
Based on conversations with participants, the apps that were most frequently used are Bumble, BLK, Tinder, and Match.com. These will serve as the primary focus for the remainder of my research.
Survey and interview questions

Motivated by family and friends' discussions about their challenges with dating apps, I surveyed 10 active users to collect quantitative data on their preferences, satisfaction levels, and views on the effectiveness of existing matching algorithms.
I initiated my research by gathering 10 users with extensive experience with dating apps and conducted a consistent 10-question survey through both phone and in-person interviews.
I felt this approach would be more personalized and intimate, offering participants a safe space to discuss their experiences.
The overall results significantly addressed the users' problems, leading to the development of features such as communication games and ghosting alerts. These enhancements helped create a more relatable and confident environment, bringing users steps closer to finding their ideal match.
User Satisfaction Percentages and Frequency of Dating App Usage
User satisfaction with the dating app status varied, with some users reporting positive experiences while others expressed frustration and disappointment. This variation will reflect how frequently users engage with dating apps.
Initial Statistics based on surveys
Based on user feedback and research, this chart illustrates the dating apps currently in use and highlights the most important features to users.
Dating App(s) Currently Used Or Have Used In The Past.
What's Most Important To Dating App Users.
Essential Findings
User Preferences
Users expressed a desire for more personalized match recommendations based on shared values and interests rather than just physical attributes or basic demographics.
Key factors influencing user satisfaction included the relevance of matches, the depth of profile information, and the accuracy of algorithmic recommendations.
To enhance user engagement and build genuine connections, dating apps need a feature that addresses the issue of ghosting and encourages consistent communication.
Current App Limitations
Many existing apps rely heavily on swiping and basic filters, which do not fully capture users' complex preferences and relationship goals.
Users often feel that the current matching algorithms are too simplistic and do not account for nuanced aspects of personality and interests.
Effective Features
Personalized interest questionnaires and value-based matching were highlighted as effective ways to enhance user experience. Participants in the pilot study reported higher satisfaction with matches that aligned with their detailed preferences.
A feature that prevents ghosting will be effective because it directly addresses the common issue of disappearing communication, prompting users to engage more consistently. By highlighting problematic behavior, the feature encourages accountability and fosters a more respectful and communicative environment, ultimately improving user satisfaction and reducing instances of ghosting.
Competitive Analysis
Match.com excels in match accuracy, communication depth, and advanced privacy features. Bumble offers strong communication options, interactive features, and good privacy controls. Tinder and BLK focus more on basic matching and visibility features, with less emphasis on in-depth personalization, advanced privacy, or anti-ghosting tools. None of the app’s features are specifically designed to address ghosting or interactive games.
Recommendations
Enhanced Profile Information
Introduce more comprehensive profile sections that allow users to specify their interests, values, and relationship goals in detail.
Advanced Matching Algorithms
Develop and implement machine learning algorithms that analyze users' preferences, behaviors, and interactions to provide more accurate and meaningful match suggestions.
Interactive Features
Incorporate interactive features like interest-based quizzes, communication games, and value alignment assessments to engage users and refine match recommendations.
Ghosting Alert
Implement a ghosting alert notification that discreetly informs users when they have received multiple reports of ghosting behavior.
Conclusion
The research highlights the importance of moving beyond basic matching criteria to offer a more personalized and engaging dating experience. By integrating advanced algorithms, adding needed features, and enhancing profile information, dating apps can better align with users' interests and values, leading to more satisfying and meaningful connections.
The Solution
To address the limitations of current dating apps and enhance user satisfaction, we propose the development and implementation of a comprehensive solution that includes enhanced profile sections for detailed interests and values, advanced machine learning algorithms for personalized match recommendations, and interactive features like quizzes and games, a to engage users. Additionally, establishing a continuous feedback loop will allow users to rate their matches and provide insights, enabling ongoing optimization of the matching algorithms to better meet users' preferences and reduce issues like ghosting.
A "Ghosting Alert" button will be integrated into the messaging feature of the app to help prevent ghosting. This button becomes available if a match has not responded within 5 days. If a user accumulates 5 ghosting alerts from different matches, an alert will be displayed for one week with new matches, indicating that the user has exhibited ghosting behavior. After this period, the alert will no longer appear for new matches.
Key benefits for overall solution:
Filter
Users will have the ability to filter by criteria such as age, height, gender, and more.
Matches
Users can swipe left to indicate disinterest and right to express interest.
Users will have the option to engage in video chat for a face-to-face interaction.
Notifications
If a user remains inactive for 3 days, the app will send a reminder message.
Alerts
The Ghost Alert feature allows users to activate this option if there’s no response from a match within 5 days. Once 5 matches have been marked, it will notify new potential matches.
Video Chat
Games
Users will have access to an icebreaker game designed to help them get to know each other better.
User Flow
To enhance the user experience for the dating app, I designed a user flow to simplify the registration, matching processes, and added features. I validated this flow through a thorough approach, starting with user research via interviews and surveys to understand target audience needs and pain points. This research guided the design decisions to align with user expectations. I then conducted usability testing with participants, gathering feedback on the flow's intuitiveness and efficiency, and used this data to address any usability issues. Finally, I incorporated user feedback and ensured the revised flow met both user needs and broader objectives.
Sketching
I created a low-fidelity sketch to develop an effective design for the dating app.
Wireframing
After conducting research, I resolved the issue and developed a solution. Following the sketching phase, I created a wireframe to provide a more definitive visual outline for the app.

Login Sign/Sign up screen
Here, users can sign in using their email, mobile number, or preferred social media account.
During sign-up, users will be guided through four screens to create their Yours Truly profile. This process involves setting filters, providing some information about themselves to potential matches, and uploading at least one photo.
Creating A New Account
Messages
Messages will display multiple matches, ranging from the oldest to the newest. At the bottom, users will find options to explore matches, message them, or view their profiles. After 5 days of no response, a ghost option will appear in the messages. Users will also have the ability to video chat and play icebreaker games.
Explore/Match
The Explore screen enables members to scroll through potential matches. Users can press the “X” or swipe left to pass, and press the heart or swipe right to like a match. Additionally, users can view the profiles of potential matches. When both users like each other's profiles, it results in a match!
Ghost Alert
Ghost Alert is a notification that appears in the user’s messages after 5 days of no response. Users can activate this alert to flag a "Potential Ghoster," which will then close the chat. If a potential ghoster receives 5 alerts from 5 different matches, a notification will be displayed on the new matches screen for one week.
Face Share
Face Share" allows users to engage in face-to-face video chats to become better acquainted. This feature is designed for users who prefer a deeper level of communication without having to exchange phone numbers.
Ice Breaker
"Ice Breaker" is a game designed to help matches get to know each other better. It’s particularly useful for those who are shy or unsure how to initiate a conversation.
